Description

I can't start the current beta on Linux. The loading screen shows up and animates, but below is a crash report window (see attached screenshot).

Non-beta version starts fine (but I can't click anything below the menu bar)

Thank you for your report. On the non-beta version, make sure to set the correct resolution.

Hey Alexander, could you tell us more about your Linux system ? Which distribution are you using ?

#4 Updated by Alexander Brüning 12 months ago

Sure. I'm using Gentoo (well, Funtoo, but it's basically the same) on kernel 4.14.8-gentoo-r1 with Xorg 1.19.3 and Nvidia's 387.34 drivers (GTX 1050 TI). My DE is XFCE 4.12 (compositor is off). The only thing that's a bit unusual is that I don't use Pulseaudio.

Thanks. My next question was going to be about whether you used PulseAudio - we suspected that you didn't. We're investigating whether PA is now required, and how we can offer a workaround :)

#6 Updated by Alexander Brüning 12 months ago

If it helps, running the game with the apulse wrapper (https://github.com/i-rinat/apulse) doesn't change anything.

#7 Updated by Gwennaël Arbona 12 months ago

If you're willing to test a workaround, here's what I can suggest.

Go to ~/.config/Epic/HeliumRain/Config/LinuxNoEditor/Engine.ini, and add the following section.

[Audio]
AudioDeviceModuleName=ALAudio

Not sure this can work, but it's my best guess for now.

#8 Updated by Alexander Brüning 12 months ago

Is there a "Saved" missing in that path? The file was completely empty, adding the setting didn't make it work.

#9 Updated by Gwennaël Arbona 12 months ago

Yes, sorry, that would be ~/.config/Epic/HeliumRain/Saved/Config/LinuxNoEditor/Engine.ini. Is that what you tried ?

#10 Updated by Alexander Brüning 12 months ago

Yes

#11 Updated by Gwennaël Arbona 12 months ago

Thanks. I'll keep you aware of our progress on this.

#12 Updated by Gwennaël Arbona 12 months ago

Here's another attempt.

Could you try running the beta with the following command-line parameter ?

-ini:Engine:[Audio]:AudioDeviceModuleName=ALAudio

It's another wild guess, hopefully that works.

#13 Updated by Alexander Brüning 12 months ago

No luck with that either, sorry. I could just temporarily install PulseAudio for testing, if that would help.

#14 Updated by Gwennaël Arbona 12 months ago

Can you upload the Diagnostics.txt or error screenshot for the latest attempt ? I'd love to check if something has changed. We're currently trying to two different startup crashes and you might suffer from both.

#15 Updated by Alexander Brüning 12 months ago

Here you go

#16 Updated by Gwennaël Arbona 12 months ago

Thanks. That's the extent of what I can try tonight. In the meantime, f you feel comfortable installing PulseAudio temporarily, feel free to try that. We'll also update the beta branch very soon (today or tomorrow) with an updated release, which could also be of interest to you - though no specific audio patches are supposed to be included.

#17 Updated by Alexander Brüning 12 months ago

Alright, looking forward to it.

Installed PulseAudio, the beta does start with it installed, but still had the problem where nothing below the menu bar can be interacted with, save for the 3D safe(?) in the settings menu.

#18 Updated by Gwennaël Arbona 12 months ago

Can you look at /.config/Epic/HeliumRain/Saved/Config/GameUserSettings.ini, and check the ResolutionSizeX/Y and LastConfirmedResolutionSizeX/Y lines for your real resolution ?

#19 Updated by Alexander Brüning 12 months ago

They both say 1920 by 1080, which is correct.

#20 Updated by Gwennaël Arbona 12 months ago

Weird. Wait for the next beta update - there is a fix coming for DPI settings which might be related. But that's one issue we've never seen before.

#21 Updated by Alexander Brüning 12 months ago

OK, I'll open a new ticket if that issue isn't solved by it.
